NOTES & NEWS

CHARLIE ROBISON IN-STORE AT WATERLOO TUESDAY, JUNE 23RD AT 5PM

Don't miss Charlie Robison performing on the Waterloo stage this Tuesday June 23rd at 5pm, in celebration of his new release, Beautiful Day!

On Beautiful Day we see a Robison who is heartbroken and harboring a pain that his background and machismo won’t fully allow him to bear. “Reconsider,” written by Keith Gattis and Charles Brocco, is a devastatingly honest plea for reconciliation, while the self-penned following track “Feelin’ Good” admits resignation to the fact that you can’t change what you can’t change, even when you had–and would give anything to get back–an angel who “promised she’d deliver.” “She’d save my soul,” Robison sings. “But she left a hole.”

REGINA SPEKTOR PIZZA / LISTENING PARTY AT WATERLOO WED. JUNE 24TH AT 5PM! WITH FREE PIZZA FROM AUSTIN'S PIZZA!

Join us on Wednesday June 24th at 5pm, we'll be spinning Regina Spektor's new release, Far in it's entirety while enjoying some FREE pizza thanks to Austin's Pizza!

On her new release, Far, the eccentric pop starlet amplifies her appeal with a heavy-hitting production foursome: Jeff Lynne, Begin to Hope 's David Kahne, Mike Elizondo, and Garret "Jacknife" Lee. The venturesome tracklist involves shadowy voyeuristic narratives, poppy numbers about Blockbuster and lost wallets , and some Spektorian goofball silliness ("Folding Chair" has the singer imitating a dolphin).

UPCOMING IN-STORES & EVENTS

CHARLIE ROBISON TUESDAY, JUNE 23RD AT 5PM!

Beautiful Day is both Charlie’s most inspired disc and his most listenable, an album that beautifully balances hooky rhythms and crisp production with his typically razor-sharp lyrics (all of this underscored by guitarist Charlie Sexton’s engaging and tasteful contributions). It is also Robison’s most personal work to date, if not his most adventurous. Although its content is neither as epic nor as literarily weighty as much of the material on seminal disc Life of The Party, Beautiful Day is considerably more emotionally revealing.

MONAHANS THURSDAY, JUNE 25TH AT 5PM!

The Austin-and-San Francisco-based band Monahans began in the Spring of 2006 as a new project by Milton Mapes collaborators Greg Vanderpool, Roberto Sanchez, Jim Fredley and Britton Beisenherz. As Monahans, the group expanded on their drone-based landscape rock with an intense and decisively apolitical pulse. The band's first release, Low Pining (Undertow 2007), was born out of mostly nameless instrumental soundtracks and rhythms (Explosions In The Sky meets Califone) and later weaved with strands of detachment and Cold War Era urgency in the spirit of early U2, R.E.M., The Police and everyone's hero, Neil Young.

JOEL GUZMAN & SARAH FOX FRIDAY, JUNE 26TH AT 5PM!

Joel and Sarah. Talented, versatile and inspiring, the power couple of accordionist/ producer/arranger Joel Guzman and singer/ songwriter Sarah Fox has been one of the most prolific and influential duos in Central and South Texas. Their field of musical expertise runs the gamut from Rock and Blues to Folk and Jazz to Conjunto and Americana. On their own, they are virtuosic performers. Together, they are top-notch pair that have led several groups from Los Aztex to the Mexican Roots Trio.

TRIPLE COBRA MONDAY JUNE 29TH AT 5PM!

Remember when Rock n' Roll kicked ass? Triple Cobra does. The sexiest band in San Francisco sends epic melodies soaring over sumptuous riffs, relinquishing the mediocrity of life to the majesty of rock. This triumph of sound is matched only by the grandeur of performance. Dancers adorned in furs, feathers and fishnets shake and grind under a heroic light show overflowing with intrigue and innuendo.

-REFRESHMENTS FOR ALL PROVIDED BY SHINER!

CONTESTS

WIN FREE ADMISSION TO SEE ...

JOHN VANDERSLICE AND THE TALLEST MAN ON EARTH AT THE PARISH, FRIDAY JUNE 26TH!

 John Vanderslice
What makes John Vanderslice perhaps the most consistently compelling songwriter on the indie scene is the critical fecundity of his text. Over the course of his six albums, he's shown a nearly peerless skill for subverting conventions of narrative voice, thereby allowing himself room to craft ambitious fictions that resist comparisons to many of even his most talented contemporaries' variations on confessional singer-songwriter tropes. And because his songs typically trade in modern feelings of disconnection, it isn't a matter of a steely denial of self that they make a strict autobiographical reading all but impossible. Instead, that's structurally right for the material and only gives the active listener even greater interpretive leeway.
